Darewadi

Located in Junnar tehsil of Pune district, Darewadi is a small hamlet of 39 households (with population over 200). Due to its remote location, grid connection is impossible to provide the households with 24x7 electricity. Gram Oorja, in association with Bosch Solar Energy AG set up a 9.36 kWp solar micro grid as a research and pilot project, which has been in operation since July 2012. The electricity consumption is metered and consumers are charged for their usage, which can take care of operations and maintenance of the plan. Complete ownership of plant and micro grid has been transferred to the Village Energy Committee (Vandev Gramodyog Nyas).
The villagers, along with access to 24x7 electricity can now operate 10 TV sets, 2 computers, 2 water pumps and 1 flour mill for their personal as well as commercial use.

Jawhar

About 100 kilometres away from Thane (Mumbai), Jawhar is a tehsil in Palghar district of Maharashtra and a home to tribal settlements, living in small clusters of 278 hamlets called ‘Pada’. These Padas are scattered over 60000 Hectares; the population of each pada varies from 60 to 600 and have been living in the darkness due to unavailability of grid electricity.
In order to address this issue, Gram Oorja Solutions Private Limited has installed 7 Solar PV Based Microgrid system in association with ICICI Bank and Pragati Pratishthan ranging from a size as small as 1.5 kW to as large as 10.5 kW (total of 38kWp) in June 2015, depending on their load demand. Designs have been made keeping future aspirations in mind.

Gram Oorja have also successfully implemented 2 solar microgrid projects in April 2016. These were carried out in association with Anchor by Panasonic in remote areas of Jawhar taluka of Maharashtra - Songiripada and Vazarepada thereby bringing light and electricity to 38 households (220 population).

Recently, Gram Oorja tied up with Bank of America to provide light and electricity through 2 solar microgrid projects for the villagers of Humranpada and Vanvasipada. These projects catered to the energy need of 63 households and was successfully completed in May 2016.

Dharni

Dharni is a tehsil located in Amravati district, is home to tribal population over 32000. Kinnikheda, Khamda and Khokmar are three remote off-grid villages in Dharni under the gram panchayat Rangubeli. Gram Oorja, in association with Bank of America implemented 3 solar PV based microgrid projects in November 2016 and March 2017. The total system size of 30.42 kWp is now successfully providing electricity for lighting and power to over 140 households in the villages.

Viral

A small village of 22 households (population nearly 90), Viral is remotely located in Joida Tehsil of Uttar Kannada District. Due to the forest regulations, Viral is not connected the grid. Gram Oorja paired up once again with Bosch Solar Energy AG to set up a 5.04 kWp solar photovoltaic based mini power grid in March 2014. The preliminary utilization of electricity is for domestic lighting, street lighting, mobile charging, running appliances such as TV sets, computers, music system (occasionally for community function) and flour mill. The local facilitation in community engagement was made possible by the local NGO, Sanjeevani Seva Trust in Joida.

Bhamane

Bhamane is a remote village under the Gram Panchayat Kumbarwada, which is located deep inside a forest in Joida tehsil, Uttar Kannad district of Karnataka. Due to forest regulations, Bhamane is unable to receive grid electricity, even though the nearest grid line is just 15 kms away from the village. With 34 households (population of approximately 200), the village also has 2 primary schools and uses Kerosene for their lighting purposes.
In May 2016, Gram Oorja partnered with Smart Hydro Power to implement a Hybrid Microgrid system using 3 kWp capacity from Solar PV coupled with a micro hydro turbine of 5 kWp capacity. For each household one energy meter, 4 LED lights, 2 plug point were provided as part of the project; a Rice Mill and a Flour Mill is also in operation for commercial use by the villagers.

Gumla

Despite being rich in natural and mineral resources, there is no grid electricity in many of the villages of Gumla district due to its remoteness and forest regulations; Kerosene is normally used for lighting purpose. As a result, there is no access to TVs and other appliances and long walk is involved for grinding grain as they have to go to the nearest electrified village. In some cases, there are no water pumps for irrigation and household use.
With the help of a total of 42 kWp Solar PV Micro grid Projects, Gram Oorja Solutions Private Limited in association with Bank of America provided light and electricity to over 180 households in the remote villages under Raidih block of Gumla district. These projects were successfully commissioned in December 2016 and March 2017.
